It’s amazing how much security cameras and speaker systems have advanced since XA Security first got started. They’re smarter, faster and more accessible than ever. In a lot of situations, especially for property, construction and commercial security, these systems can reduce the need for a guard.
We’ve embraced that shift ourselves. Our headquarters located near downtown in Calgary’s southwest, a vibrant and diverse inner-city neighbourhood, reflects how we approach this technology. Working closely with our landlord, we’ve integrated Ubiquiti UniFi cameras and modern access systems throughout the building. These tools help us stay alert and connected, even when no one’s physically on-site.
But we certainly don’t see them replacing people. They give our team eyes where we can’t be and time to focus where it counts.
Technology, particularly AI detection, has been a real game-changer. It lets us do more with less, and that’s great news for our clients. In multi-site property settings (like residential communities or commercial developments), AI detection makes it possible to see a lot more at once. With real-time monitoring, our team on the ground knows what’s happening instantly and can respond right away.
It’s also cost-effective. Once installed, cameras provide continuous coverage without the ongoing costs of additional staffing, giving property owners better control of their sites without stretching their budgets.
But let’s be real: you can’t monitor a museum with a camera alone. Or a major event, or an expansive construction site with high-value equipment.
Cameras on their own can’t respond to the conditions on site, they simply keep a record, at best sending a notification to your phone as you sleep through the night.
In these environments, human presence still matters and it always will. A camera can’t de-escalate a situation or make a judgement call in real time. That one guard can: respond to alerts, access locked areas, or shut off water during a leak.
